NPOA 2015 Annual Owners Conference Committee

Knowing that no one understands what printers want and need to learn like another printer, the NPOA board of directors appointed three long-time printers to chair the 2015 annual Owners Conference in April 2015. They also added a vendor member for the first time, for advice on partnering with sponsors, suppliers and vendors.

Cyndy Harkins is the President and “Chief of Everything” of Pioneer Printing in Lincoln, Nebraska. Pioneer Printing was started by Cyndi’s parents in 1980 as the first Sir Speedy Printing Center in Nebraska. She joined them in 1981 working as a press operator, and then moved on to learning graphics and every other job in the shop. She became the owner in 1992. Citing sales as one of her weak spots, Cyndy is helping to develop sessions on marketing and sales to help owners like herself.

“I've been to many conferences over the years and I liked the idea of helping create a program for printers like me, building on what I've learned and liked in the past.” - Cyndy Harkins

Another second generation owner, Jim Sullivan began working with his parents at DSA Printing in Chelmsford, MA as a teenager. He quickly developed an interest in printing, and added that as his trade in high school to strengthen his on-the-job education. After graduation, he began working in the printing company full time. Jim learned all aspects of the business from running equipment to sales, taking over as owner in 2010. That same year, he joined a peer group and is still an active member. Jim is working on a session on peer groups for this conference, with a moderated panel to help attendees understand the benefits, best practices, and potential pitfalls of peer groups.

“Joining a peer group was a tremendous help for my business, and for me personally. I think NPOA can help printers create their own peer group, or strengthen their existing one.” - Jim Sullivan

Bob Molacek is the owner of RJM Companies, a print and marketing services business in Fridley, Minnesota with 14 employees. Focusing on contract customer service and acquisitions has resulted in the growth of his business over the past 18 years. Bob received a BS degree in Accounting and Management from University of Minnesota-Moorhead and a MSBA Finance Degree at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Bob's focus on the committee is helping other printers become more profitable. He is collaborating with John Stewart and Larry Hunt on the Keynote Session for Saturday on Profit Leaders.

“My first NPOA event was last year’s conference. I was very impressed with the program and with the social activities which ultimately lead to sharing of business ideas and new friendships.  Where franchise organizations focus on sales growth at their annual meetings, the NPOA conference focuses on business profitability and success. I also like that the NPOA is a member-driven organization run by volunteers, and that's why I decided to participate on the 2015 Conference Committee.” - Bob Molacek

Rounding out the committee is vendor member, Richard Beile, the National Sales Manager for Discount Labels in New Albany, IN. Discount Labels is a trade-only label manufacturer and has been supporting its resellers for 50 years. Richard joined Discount Labels in August of 2013 after a lengthy career of sales, sales management and National Accounts with Xpedx. He attended his first NPOA conference in February 2014. Richard is helping to develop an idea to extend the Supplier Showcase, make it part of the conference session rather than just a reception, and make it a more interactive experience for attendees and vendors.

"2014 was my first exposure to NPOA. You are an energetic, highly engaged group. I was particularly pleased with the degree to which vendors are given access to event content and to the membership." - Richard Beile
