NPOA ANNOUNCES AGENDA FOR 2017 SPRING OWNERS CONFERENCE

Warrendale, PA—The National Print Owners Association (NPOA) has released the agenda for its fifth Annual Owners Conference to be held in New Orleans at the Hotel Intercontinental from February 2-4. NOLA is the site of the first ever NPOA conference in 2013, held right after the founding members started the association.

Industry experts Dave Fellman, Pamela Crouser and Philip Beyer will anchor dynamic educational sessions. Other notable presenters will include Dan Antonelli from SignShopMarketing and Thaddeus Rex.

The conference will begin on Thursday evening, February 2 with the popular and entertaining Welcome Reception sponsored by the conference host, Ricoh. This reception offers a close setting to reconnect with print shop owners and previous attendees and make new friends before heading out to on-your-own group dinners at various Nawlin’s hot spots.

“We are proud to host and sponsor this year’s NPOA Owners Conference, largely due to the similarities in Ricoh’s vision and NPOA’s values,” said John Fulena, Vice President, Production Printing Business Group, Ricoh USA, Inc. “NPOA is laser-focused on giving print owners the tools to enhance growth and profitability – and so is Ricoh. When we see all NPOA has done to help printers, including many of our own customers, there is no question that we want to support it. We are looking forward to another exciting, educational conference.”

Friday will kick off the educational presentations with a breakfast buffet and special keynote by Thaddeus Rex on The Science of Charisma. The day’s general sessions, sponsored by AccuZIP, FASTSIGNS, Allegra Marketing & Print and Pocket Folders FAST, will build on the concepts and key points shared in Rex’s session, and will feature “Mechanics, Message and Mardi Gras.”  Printer’s Plan will once again sponsor the popular One Minute Mastermind luncheon, an engaging and information ideas exchange.

Dave Fellman will be the keynote speaker on Saturday morning for a breakfast presentation on “The Top Ten Mistake Printers Make and How to Avoid Them!” sponsored by Marketing Ideas for Printers. A panel of successful printers will address problem solving and mistake avoidance after the presentation by Fellman, and moderated round table before the Industry Luncheon will allow attendees to brainstorm with fellow print owners. The “Partners in Profit” Supplier Showcase – part reception, part mini-trade show, will cap off the conference activities with a vibrant mix of workshops, networking and vendor booths.

This conference has been carefully designed to provide optimal learning experiences from presenters as well as industry peers, while taking advantage of the fun and energy of the Big Easy! To do this, the NPOA board of directors enlisted the help of Kevin Herbert, St. Charles Printing and FASTSIGNS of St. Charles in Boutte, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans; Danny Paline, Five Star Printing and Signs in Denham Springs, LA; and Pamela Crouser, PROforma, an associate member of NPOA.

I have always believed learning is a requirement to achieve the goals that we have set for our businesses and ourselves. NPOA and this conference is a wonderful opportunity to tap into amazing training, people and information. I am honored to participate,” says Crouser.

Early bird registration is $485 for NPOA members and $590 for non-members and ends on December 1, 2016. Regular registration is $565 for members and $690 for non-members. There are discounted rates for attendees from the same company. Special conference hotel rates at the Intercontinental are $199 per night. More details and registration information is available at the NPOA website, www.printowners.org.

NPOA update for members on industry efforts to stop patent trolls

The following article appeared in WhatTheyThink. NPOA believes this is important for all members to be informed off.  As an industry, all major industry stakeholders are working to stop this and protect all printers. You as an owner need to keep informed about what you can do and how you can fight this. The full article will help you do so.

A patent troll is a company or person that purchases a patent and then sues another company claiming that the use of one of its products infringes on the purchased patent.

Trolls attempt to enforce patent rights against alleged infringers far beyond the patent's actual value or contribution to the technology or the industry that the patent represents. Patent trolls typically do not manufacture products or provide services based upon the patents in question. They use patents as “legal weapons,” instead of actually creating any new products or coming up with new ideas to improve business, commerce, or society. Trolls are in the business of threatening and creating litigation.

Further, trolls often buy-up patents cheaply from companies that are looking to monetize patents that have little or no value, or should have not been granted to begin with, because of Prior Art demonstrating that what the patents teach was obvious prior to the time of application for the patent. These patents are subject to an invalidity contention and termination by the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) when alleged infringers contest the trolls. They are typically very broad, covering generic or well-known types of applications that should never have been patented to begin with.

In possession of these broad and vague patents, the troll then sends out intimidating letters to those they argue infringe on their patents. It is a scare tactic that preys on innocent companies that are merely providing a service needed by society. These letters threaten legal action unless the alleged infringer agrees to pay a licensing fee, which can often range to the tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Many who receive infringement letters will choose to pay the licensing-fee out of fear, and because patent litigation is extremely expensive and can involve lengthy and time-consuming court deliberations.

Melbourne, FL (January 12, 2016) - The Board of Directors of the National Print Owners Association (NPOA) announced today that it has contracted with Printing Industries of America (PIA) for a number of administrative services, effective February 1st. NPOA’s board emphasized that the relationship with PIA is strictly for services and should not be construed as anything but. “Our membership is proud of being an association of print entrepreneurs, and our relationship with PIA in no way changes our autonomy as an independent organization with its own board, mission, and direction. We are simply capitalizing on existing expertise from a known and trusted organization in our industry and paying for the services,” added Martin.

“We are honored to work with NPOA and look forward to a long relationship," said Michael Makin, President and CEO of Printing Industries of America.
